JCB Triumph Hurdle Preview

Nicky Henderson believes Walkon is Zaynar’s main rival in Friday’s JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, despite having already beaten him once this season.

The two met at Newbury back in December when Henderson’s grey was making his hurdling debut but also carrying 7lb less than Alan King’s juvenile.

Zaynar maintained his unbeaten record over timber at Ascot but many were not impressed with his display that day, or in a racecourse gallop at Kempton, and Henderson has decided to apply some headgear in an attempt to help him travel better through the race.

“He will wear cheekpieces,” said Henderson.

“He surprised me at Newbury a little but he was the same there as at Ascot. After his work at Kempton what I didn’t want was everyone to tell me how badly he worked. He’s not that sort of horse.

“The reason he didn’t run in the Adonis is because I knew Kempton wouldn’t suit and a mile and a half on the all-weather was not going to suit either but it was part of his preparation.

“He’s a very, very good jumper. He did beat Walkon and he’s still the horse I would probably be most worried about.

“It still looks very open but his form is solid and we are just going to go there and see what he can do. For people who are worried what they saw at Kempton, they shouldn’t be too fussed about that.”

Barry Geraghty will be in the saddle once more hoping to add to his Champion Hurdle win on Punjabi earlier in the week.
