The William Hill Trophy Handicap or the National Hunt Handicap runs at 16:00 on 11th March 2008, the prize money is £90,000 and is for 5 year olds and run over 3m 110y, there is expected to be 34 runners.

WilliamHill Trophy Handicap Betting Guide

The William Hill Trophy is a hard fought race with a large field and its the first handicap of the festival. You have to go back to 1994 and Antonin to
find the last favourite to win, and there has only being one since 1977.
We therefore suggest you look down the card for an outsider. No winner in lst 10 hascarried more than 11 stone.. The winners recently have ended to be 8 or 9 year olds so you can maybe cut down the field by discounting horses over the age of 10 and below 8. No trainer has got a monopoly on this event although Martin Pipe trained horses do particularly bad!.so maybe avoid his trained mares. So in summary look for

Look for horse who is 8 or 9 years old

A Horse that is not trained by Martin Pipe

Avoid favourites so look from 4th in the betting

Horses who have had max of 3 outings this year

Look for winning form over 3m + in a handicap

Look for a horse running off under 11st. .

The First Day of Cheltenham 2010 sees 6 top clas races, with the feature race being the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle
Spinal Research Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (grade 1)
Philip Hobbs has his team in good form coming into the festival and Menorah is no exception having not been out of the first two home in any of his four starts over hurdles for the stable since his debut success in a bumper in Ireland and earning a rating of 147 but he faces no easy task against DUNGUIB, who can get backers off to a good start with the main danger rated as Get Me Out Of Here. Jonjo O’Neill’s gelding remains unbeaten after five starts and was most impressive when beating 22 rivals in the Grade 3 Totesport Trophy Hurdle at Newbury last month off a mark of 135. We may not have seen the best of the six-year-old yet and he has to be respected but will need to improve again to get the better of the selection. Nicky Henderson’s Oscar Whisky has similarly yet to taste defeat in his four starts and he too has to be considered but may not be as effective on the better ground today than the heavy ground that he handled really well at Sandown last time. Dan Breen was well held on his only start in a bumper in Ireland but has run better since joining David Pipe’s stable, winning all three starts but this is a lot tougher than the races that he has contested so far. Willie Mullins had a marvellous Festival 12 months ago and is represented in the opener by Flat Out and Blackstairmountain with the latter having shown improved form of late with wins at Galway and Punchestown but this is likely to go to another Irish challenger in Dunguib. Philip Fenton’s gelding won the Champion Bumper last season in impressive fashion by 10 lengths before further success in that sphere at the Punchestown Festival. He has done nothing wrong since being put over hurdles this term winning all four starts, including Grade 1 races in his last two outings, and can make it five on the bounce over timber today.
Champion Hurdle Preview
PUNJABI can post back-to-back successes in this race with Solwhit and Celestial Halo the dangers. Nicky Henderson’s inmate was a shock victor last term and while this season has been disappointing for his followers, in truth, this race is probably an easier renewal than the Champion Hurdle he won. Connections have spoken of him as a spring horse and if that is the case, he should come on for his victory in an egg-and-spoon race at Kempton. Solwhit meanwhile is one of the most improved horses in training. He should stay the two miles and were he not the subject of a bad scope last week, he would have probably shaded favouritism. Good ground suits. Celestial Halo has a couple of questions to answer though this probable front runner has a tonguestrap on for the first time. As one of the glaring omissions in his CV, Paul Nicholls will be desperate to win a Champion Hurdle. Binocular was favourite for this race last year though has been distinctly unimpressive this season. Muscular problems have been blamed though he has reportedly been in good form on the gallops over the last few weeks. Zaynar has been rejected by Barry Geraghty and that could tell its own tale. He can be forgiven for being turned over at odds of 1/14 on bottomless going at Kelso. Noel Meade has been distinctly downbeat about Go Native and Cheltenham’s watering policies. Connections stand on the verge of a £1 million bonus and having taken two key trials, he has every right to the mantle of market leadership. Khyber Kim has been rejuvenated by Nigel Twiston-Davies and much of the credit can go to Paddy Brennan. The pair have a bit to find though have had much better form en route to the big race than most. Medermit won Haydock’s Champion Hurdle trial. The yard took this prize previously with Katchit and invariably seem to be underestimated at this grade. Starluck travels well and if staying has to be given a chance. His unorthodox prep saw him win on the Polytrack at Kempton. If Celestial Halo sets the pace at speed, his chance could be compromised. Jumbo Rio, Won In The Dark and Raise Your Heart are predictably trading at big odds and in fairness to the them, that reflects their chances based on anything they have shown at the races. A race where holes can be found in the form of plenty but Punjabi has been there and done that and his experience could count for plenty.

The Grand Annual wraps up the Cheltenham Festival we hope it was a profitable week for you.

Close attention will be paid to the Seven Barrows runners, Chapoturgeon would merit respect if turned out again but Nicholls has a strong hand anyway with Poquelin and Pasco at his disposal as well as former winner Andreas who’s joined in the line-up by last year’s victor Tiger Cry but CLEW BAY COVE is the one that we want to be with. My Petra was second to Tiger Cry from a 16lb lower mark last year so has a stiff enough task even allowing for the improvement that she’s made during the past twelve months and French Opera may turn out to be the yard’s best hope but this would be some ask to open his account over fences in this contest. Poquelin didn’t run his race at Ascot but achieved a remarkable success over course and distance on his penultimate start and may have enough in the locker to defy a stiff enough looking mark. Chapoturgeon would look thrown in if able to take his chance but there has to be some doubt about that and the likeable Pasco is an able substitute having posted a good round of jumping at Huntingdon but he faces a much sterner test of his credentials. Lorient Express has shown remarkable improvement this term given his age and injury problems so can’t be left out and nor can Calatagan who was third last year whilst Oh Crick is interesting at the foot of the weights as this could bring out the best in him. Clew Bay Clove may lack the sexy profile of the unexposed novices but we know that his jumping will take the pressure and that he’s well enough handicapped to be competitive. He was well held by I’msingingtheblues and Doctor David at Doncaster but he was outpaced there before staying on and he should be doing just that up the hill in the closing stages. He has looked back to his best this season, this is his optimum trip and Clew Bay Cove can prove it by landing the Festival finale.

Just the eight from Nicholashayne to consider and we’ll plump for PIRAYA ahead of Big Eared Fran and Andytown. Big Eared Fran is partnered by the yard’s conditional and won very easily on his handicap bow at the weekend which leaves him looking very well handicapped. He was fancied for the bumper last year but didn’t fire there and has taken a while to get his act together over hurdles; he has now and has a clear chance. Mamlook has some big handicap form to his name but he has been below par in two visits here so has something to prove on that front. Penn Da Benn has turned over a new leaf and could still be open to plenty of improvement but his two wins were achieved in small fields. Faltering Fullback is interesting back up in trip with cheekpieces fitted whilst Carrickboy is better than he showed last time and enters calculations with his yard enjoying a good week. Quartz De Thaix was favourite for the race won by Big Eared Fran last Saturday and it’s interesting to see him turned out again quickly after that disappointment. Andytown has something to prove after disappointing runs over fences and hurdles but he had looked very promising when winning here in October and shouldn’t be dismissed. Little Shilling has had a remarkable year but this is surely asking too much and we’ll opt for Piraya who was tipped up to win a valuable chase here in November. The yard was out of form then and when he took a heavy fall at Ascot in December but there was a lot more to like about his run in the Racing Post Chase last month. He’s completely unexposed over hurdles and is 10lbs lower than when he began the season which makes Piraya worth an interest.

ging, smart chasers Juveigneur, Kingscliff and Royal Auclair will have their supporters as will last year’s winner Amicelli but there’s been a buzz surrounding the challenge of CAPPA BLEU and it may be worth siding with youth. The last three winners have all been returned at 20-1 or bigger so punters should cast their eyes across this field but there have been a couple of winning favourites in the past ten years including Kingscliff who came with a big reputation from the point field. Cappa Bleu has been all the rage for this race for some time and won’t lack for assistance from the saddle. Amicelli ran away with this race last year and is sure to have had this as his target but hasn’t had the ideal preparation having fallen at Brocklesby Park. Juveigneur has an excellent track record and has been in fine form between the flags in Ireland; he may be twelve years of age now but is no back number. Paul Nicholls has a strong hand with Royal Auclair and Ofarel D’Airy whilst Kingscliff would be a popular and appropriate winner given his success here in 2003 but Cappa Bleu is taken to justify the hype.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the premium race of the week, can Denman win again or will Kauto Star win the day.
mpressive when successful 12 months ago, Denman was disappointing on his belated reappearance at Kempton five weeks ago when well held behind the improving Madison Du Berlais and it is difficult to see him retaining his crown following that effort and a safer bet looks to be stable companion KAUTO STAR. Himself impressive when winning here two years ago, the Clive Smith-owned gelding looked beaten when unseating Sam Thomas at Haydock in November but was back to his best in the King George subsequently and he is taken to reclaim the crown that he won in 2007. Kauto Star’s trainer Paul Nicholls has a strong hand in the Gold Cup being responsible for not just the last two winners of the race but also My Will and Star De Mohaison plus last season’s third Neptune Collonges, who is the pick of this trio and comes here on the back of success in Leopardstown’s Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. Jonjo O’Neill’s Exotic Dancer is capable but has been held by Kauto Star on too many occasions to be considered likely to beat the selection and of more interest may be the progressive Barbers Shop. Nicky Henderson’s gelding would be a popular winner and good for the sport being owned by The Queen. The seven-year-old found just Finger Onthe Pulse too good in the Jewson last year but he has carried on improving this term and has to be respected given his trainers fine record at the meeting. Charlie Mann’s Air Force One deserves to win a big prize but he may find this trip in this company beyond him, while Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run has a bit to find with the selection on their running in the King George but may do better over this more testing track. Madison Du Berlais is improving rapidly and has to be considered but there are doubts concerning the form of his Kempton victory and a safer bet looks to be Kauto Star, who can claim his second Gold Cup.

The Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle is the race before the biggy the gold cup. Pride Of Dulcote is a worthy and strongly fancied favourite but WEAPON’S AMNESTY appeals as an each-way alternative whilst Cape Tribulation is a smart prospect who will have plenty of supporters. Malcolm Jefferson’s runner appeared to have the measure of On Raglan Road when the latter fell three out at Doncaster and he is a progressive performer with a touch of class but this will provide him with a completely different test and he’s short enough. Pride Of Dulcote has had little to beat on his last two starts but he won both races very easily and is held in high regard. He was travelling very easily in a race at this track when Ruby Walsh took the bad fall that hospitalised him and it’s probably nothing more than a bizarre statistic that Ruby Walsh has fallen twice and unseated once on the three times that they’ve teamed up. The handicapper puts Alpha Ridge in the same league as that pair and he’s unbeaten at this trip; there is a question mark over quicker ground but he’s had little opportunity to race on it. Chariot Charger could improve for the longer trip and that’s what we’re expecting our selection to do as he’s stepped back up. He represents the yard responsible for last year’s runner-up so connections know exactly what’s required to lift this prize and was a wide margin winner of his only run over three miles, albeit in a maiden hurdle. He has to prove himself on faster ground but there’s no reason to believe that it will be a problem whilst he wasn’t suited by the drop in trip last time and Weapons Amnesty appears to have enough in his armoury to go close.
