Like most of the novice hurdles on the card, Willie Mullins appears to hold the key to the opening contest of the 2009 Festival and with Hurricane Fly ruled out, it is likely that Cousin Vinny will line up here and he certainly has a favourite’s chance.

Cousin Vinny won last year’s Festival bumper and has retained that level of form now that he has switched codes. He was beaten by Hurricane Fly on his hurdles debut, but needed the run that day and was giving the winner 3lbs. He is not short of speed, but may well appreciate further on better ground. He would easily have accounted for Pandorama over 2¼ miles last time out, but for unseating his rider at the final flight.

Mullins also trains the less heralded Kempes, but he too boasts top class form and his flat speed could be a potent weapon on decent ground.

The home challenge is headed by Red Maloney, another useful recruit from the flat. Good ground is the key to this horse and although he is yet to prove himself on a stiff track like Cheltenham, his trainer has an excellent record in the big novice events at the Festival. He has yet to be fully extended over hurdles so far and could be anything.

Nicky Henderson has had a great season to date and he has a number of possibles for this race.

Ainama disappointed on his last start at Kempton, and Eradicate may be of more interest, although he lacks experience over hurdles.

Of the outsiders, Shoreacres ran well behind Cousin Vinny in the Festival bumper last season and has some decent efforts to his name over hurdles, whilst Copper Bleu, who was impressive when winning at Newbury in November, did nothing wrong in failing to concede 17lbs to the very useful Master Of Arts at Doncaster on his latest start. If nothing else, he should make a smashing chaser in due course.
